Silver Line

Pico Station is an at-grade light rail station in the Los Angeles County Metro Rail system. It is located in the South Park neighborhood of Downtown Los Angeles, on Flower Street just north of Pico Boulevard. The station is served by the Blue Line, & the Silver Line. This station will also be served by the Expo Line when it opens in 2012.[1]

The full (official) station name is Pico/Chick Hearn. This name memorializes sportscaster Francis Dayle "Chick" Hearn (1916–2002), longtime play-by-play announcer for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Blue Line service hours are approximately from 5:00 AM until 12:45 AM daily.[2]

Expo Line service to this station is anticipated to begin in January 2012.

Metro Liner BRT service

Connection to Silver Line is located at Figueroa St. & Pico Blvd. Silver Line service hours are approximately from 4:15 AM until 1:45 AM Monday- Friday & 5:00 A.M.- 1:45 A.M. Saturdays/ Sundays & Holidays.

Location

Pico station serves the South Park neighborhood on its east, and the Figueroa/Convention district on its west. It is located on the east side of Flower Street, just north of Pico Boulevard.

North of this station is the Flower Street Tunnel, which connects Pico station to 7th St/Metro Center Station via Flower Street. The tunnel's portal is just south of 11th Street on Flower Street.

Design

Pico is an at-grade center-platform station designed to accommodate Metro light rail vehicles. The station's entrance is on the northeast corner of Flower/Pico.

Metro plans to add gates and flashing lights at this station, as part of a set of safety enhancements that have been added to the Expo Line project.[3]

History

The station opened on July 14, 1990, on opening day of the Blue Line. On that day, the Flower Street Tunnel and 7th St/Metro Center Station were still under construction. Thus, Pico Station was the northern terminus for the Blue Line until completion of the Flower Street Tunnel and 7th St/Metro Center Station in February 1991.[4]
